Growth Yield

Growth Yield :
Growth yield is an important growth parameter this is thr yield of organism that can be grown for the consumptions of a given amount of a specific substrate.
Growth yield constant is the amount of dry weight of cells produced per cells nutrients used by cells.
( i.e. Y=wt.cells made/wt.of nutrients used )

The initial concentration of this compound gives a plot of total growth versus substrate concentration which is usually linear and form the slope.
Y-yield constant for particular organisms under a given set of cultural conditions varying pH or temperature can lead to changes in the yield constant.
For the heterotropic organisms the yield of carbon substrates is not directly related to the mass of carbon availability to the cell but it depends on two factors
First is the pathway by which the carbon substrate is metabolised to produce the energy and metabolites needed for biosynthesis.
Example -
Glucose for the aerobically growing cell is about 0.5 which means that about 50% of the sugar is converted to cell materials and 50% oxidized to Carbon dioxide.
